Tracking everything is not the same as knowing anything

Most sites and products end up wired with more tracking than anyone consults. A pageview counter here, a heatmap tool there, an event for every button because someone once said more data is always better. None of it is wrong, exactly. It is just disconnected from the moment where a person actually looks at a number and changes their mind about something.

That gap, between what gets collected and what gets read, is the real failure point. An instrument nobody reads is not measuring anything. It is just running. The data sits there, technically accurate and practically useless, because the habit of consulting it never formed in the first place.

We think about analytics the way you would think about a good gauge on a piece of equipment. It earns its place by being checked, not by being installed. A single number you glance at every week and trust is worth more than a warehouse of events you built once and never queried again.

02 · Cost

The honest cost of measuring everything

Every tool you add has a cost that does not show up on a pricing page. There is an attention cost: one more dashboard to check, one more login, one more source of truth competing with the others for your Monday morning. There is a complexity cost too, since the more events and definitions you track, the harder it becomes to trust that two numbers describing the same thing actually agree.

There is a decision-fatigue cost. A person staring at twenty charts does not make a better call than a person staring at one considered number. They usually make a slower one, or no call at all, because the extra charts read like more work rather than more clarity.

And there is a privacy cost, worth naming plainly. Every additional script you load is asking something of the person on the other end, whether they notice or not. A lighter footprint is not just a technical choice, it is a small, ongoing form of respect for the people who visit what you have built.

03 · Practice

Match the tool to the habit, not the ambition

The question worth asking before installing anything is not what the most complete analytics tool available looks like. It is what you will actually open next week. A solo maker who checks numbers once a month needs something closer to a single, trustworthy gauge than a full suite of segments and funnels sitting unopened between visits.

A small team with a standing weekly review can support a little more, because the habit already exists to carry it. A growing team with someone whose job is partly to interpret data can reasonably support a deeper tool, because a person is paid to keep the definitions honest and the dashboards current.

Buying capability ahead of habit does not make you more rigorous. It usually just adds a new source of guilt: a powerful tool sitting there, technically capable of answering hard questions, that you open twice and then quietly stop opening. Scale your instruments to your actual review rhythm, and let them grow only when the rhythm does.
